Moss Bank Whites were the visitors to The Skool for this one...

With the rest of the world waking up to the prospect of no football, it was definitely game on for the Wanderers this morning. And following last weekend's unusual performance, Debs and Shaun were looking for a reaction from their players. Training had been good in the week and as the squad began arriving at The Skool, the mood was good. Our younger age groups were already in action and there was a buzz around the ground that made it feel exciting. Our old mates from Moss Bank Whites were the visitors for this one and as both sides were put through their warm-up's, the large crowd began settling in...

We had a strong bunch to choose from this morning and as the starting 7 were announced, it saw us going with a 2-3-1 shape that meant Ste was filing the gloves from the start. The defensive pairing in front of him was to be Callum and Leo and with Lucas in between Ashton and Anthony in the midfield, we definitely had some craft and guile in there today. Harvey was tasked with being the focal point up front and with Marshall, Haden and Alex to choose from off the bench, the coaches were quietly confident. All the kids had to do now was go out there and show the world what they were really made of. And guess what? They surely did that...

Right from the off we knew they were determined to right the wrongs of last weekend. The passing was sharper, the tackling more patient and technical and when we got the ball forward, we were causing the visitors problems. So it was no surprise when we took the lead on 8 minutes. We managed to get the ball forward at pace and as it found it's way to Ashton's right boot, there was only one thing on his mind. He looked up and from outside the box, he struck the ball like a rocket into the top corner of the net! A superb strike and The Wanderers were off...

We were rampant now and as we poured forward, the Moss Bank defence were working tirelessly trying to thwart our attacks. But there was nothing they could to stop our second goal - as Lucas swung in a corner and it flew straight into the back their net. Unfortunately for him, the Wanderers fans will be expecting that every time for now on! Superb...

The same man had another long-range effort that struck the wrong side of their upright - and then on came Marshall. He had been instructed by the bosses to pressure their back-line into making mistakes - and he did it to the letter! His first was typical of him - as he dropped his shoulder, found just enough space to dig out his shot and smashed the ball into the far corner of their net. A great strike - and we were playing really well now...

At the break, there was a debate as to who was going to go in between the sticks and despite his excellent performance at the back, Callum volunteered to pick up the gloves. This meant that we slipped Lucas back in the defence and on we went. The coaches praised their troops for all their effort in that first half - but the important thing was to do that again for the next 25 minutes. Out trotted both teams and off we went again...

The changes made us lose our shape a little and that gave the opposition an opportunity to get back in the game. We conceded two soft goals in essence and with the game now on a knife-edge, the next goal was important. And rather than back off and try to keep the lead, we kept pouring forward. Alex was blazing down the right and rather than play the easy pass, he decided to take on the shot. Although he may only be small, he has the power of a lion behind that boot of his and as he hit it, the ball rifled into the bottom corner of their net with the keeper no chance of stopping it. That gave us the advantage we needed to relax again - and some of the football we were playing now was a joy to behold...

The next goal was sublime. Marshall and Ashton worked together with some clever 1-2's through the middle - culminating in an inch-perfect through-ball for Marshall to finish off neatly at the back post. We were flying again now and with the Wanderers fans were buoyant gathered behind the respect barrier. The next 10 minutes saw us pepper their goal - hitting the post and watching their goalkeeper pulling off save after save - and as the game wore on, it looked more than likely that we could win this...

Moss Bank were still playing their part though and when they had the time and space to pick out a pass, they were more than handy up front. Our defence had sorted their earlier confusion out and were managing them well - and whenever they did get through, Callum was keeping them at bay. This gave our attacking players the confidence to play with freedom - so it wasn't long before we scored again. Alex beat his man over on the right and as he crossed it in, Marshall was there to tap it home for his hat-trick. Another great goal and this team had really shown what they're made of so far today...

And we weren't finished either. Because before the final whistle, we managed to score again - and it was Marshall's fourth goal of the game. He broke through the middle and as he looked up, he smashed the ball into the top corner of their net. A stunning finish - that led the Moss Bank to say that our Marshall reminded him of the great Jimmy Phillips. Accolade and a half that one...

That was that because shortly after, the whistle was blown and it was game over. The Wanderers had won - and won handsomely. Fair play to the visitors as they played their part in a great game out there - but as the reds came in, the smiles were there for all to see. That's what happens whenever every one of them puts in a shift. They certainly did that today...

The Handmade Gifts & Sweet Treats POTM was awarded to Callum as he had played exceptionally well wherever he was asked to play. He did the team proud stepping up to play in net as well - so well done mate! And a massive well done to each and every one of you out there this morning - the large crowd definitely enjoyed that one...

Thanks to the fans from both sides that made the atmosphere great and we wish the travelling fans a safe journey home and a great end to the season - if there is one after this weekend. But for today - what virus? The Wanderers won!

COME ON THE WANDERERS!!!
